Adults in Taipei City will be able to take classes in subjects such as parenting and environmental affairs as part of the city's attempts to encourage lifelong learning.
The city's Education Bureau yesterday kicked off its 2001 Taipei City Lifelong Learning Fair by presenting eight curricula and a new Web site to broaden people's horizons.
"Through this four-day fair, all Taipei citizens above 18 years old can get help to plan out their lifelong learning," said an official from the bureau.
At the open ceremony yesterday, crowds were entertained by singing, dancing, poetry reading, arts and crafts and free online activities.
Six community colleges in Taipei City will provide classes in eight subjects: environmental affairs, non-governmental organizations, community affairs, international affairs, volunteer services, civics, parenting and Taipei affairs.
The universities are in the districts of Wenshan, Shihlin, Datung, Wanhua, Hsinyi and Nankang.
According to the bureau, the curricula were designed for citizens to develop in a modern society.
Individuals can take classes at any of the six community colleges and credits are transferable between them. Students will receive certificates from the Education Bureau for completing a course.
A Web site designed by the Taipei City government was also introduced to the public at the fair yesterday.
"Through this web site," said Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (
Ma said that through this Web site, citizens could broaden their views and interests as well as enhance their knowledge and competitive skills.
"As long as you want to learn, the opportunity is everywhere," Ma said.
The fair will run through Wed-nesday in the square in front of the Taipei City government.
The Web site can be found at lifelong.taipei-elife.net.
