TSU denounces KMT localization claim as a flat lie

Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Chairman Huang Chu-wen (黃主文) called on the pan -blue camp to put a halt to what he called treacherous activities.

Huang said he was not surprised by a CNN news report on Wednesday which said that China has been lending support to and working with opposition parties in an effort to undermine the performance of the pan-green alliance.

"It is a well-known fact that China welcomes the KMT and People First Party and abhors the DPP and TSU," Huang said.

"It is therefore fair to ask which parties love Taiwan. The ones hated by China, or those favored by it?" Huang asked.

He said that welcoming support from China was treacherous and called upon opposition parties to put a stop to their own treachery.

Huang also accused the KMT of lying when he tried to paint the party as pro-localization, saying it was promulgating false information to court votes.

Huang also censured KMT Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) for being "ungrateful" by discarding his mentor, former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝), once he felt Lee had outlasted his usefulness.

Speaking to scholars, writers and former officials who have returned home from Japan and the US to support the TSU, Huang detailed the reasons why Lee and Lien have gone their separate ways.

"The reason the KMT is calling itself a pro-Taiwan party is purely to solicit votes; it is not for the good of Taiwan," Huang said.

Huang said during the 12 years that Lee was head of the KMT, he took Lien under his wing, helping him rise from governor of Taiwan Province to premier, and then to vice president.

"But when Lien was defeated last year he did a 180-degree turn, asking Lee to step down as party chairman. ... Lien is the one who's enjoyed honor and wealth, who's been eating, drinking and merry-making," Huang said.

Lien put all the blame on Lee after he lost the presidential bid last year, demanding that Lee resign from his post. Lee became disgruntled with the KMT for moving away from his localization policy and for being subservient to China under Lien's leadership. The KMT dismissed Lee in September.

Lien recently referred to Lee as "the old man," saying he has enjoyed a good life filled with life's pleasures. The KMT chairman has said repeatedly that the KMT has been a pro-Taiwan party since it was under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) and that this is one of the reasons why economic prosperity was achieved under Chiang's administration.

Lin Jiann-liang (林建良), director of the Taiwanese Association in Japan, said that the association endorsed the TSU because it is the only party that follows Lee's democratization and localization plans.

"It is also the only party that claims to safeguard Taiwan by insisting that China and Taiwan are under "special state-to-state" relations -- a model introduced by Lee in 1999," Lin said.
