The KMT yesterday released a pamphlet titled Speaking Clearly and Directly (說清楚, 講明白), to respond to former president Lee Teng-hui's (李登輝) recent critical bombardment of the KMT and its chairman Lien Chan (連戰).
The pamphlet lists seven detailed explanations concerning why the KMT revoked Lee's membership, the harm that Lee has done to the former ruling party, and an explanation of the party's stance.
The key issues covered are: The reason why Lee was kicked out of the KMT; the harm that Lee has caused the KMT; that there is no "Lee Teng-hui line," only the KMT line; that the KMT did not pander to Communist China but has worked to protect Taiwan; that the KMT has started to localize since Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國) led the party.
The pamphlet also states that the KMT lost power, but the people of Taiwan cannot lose their country; and asks "who is the evil person? Who is the bad son?"
The pamphlet says since Lee was hailed as the spiritual leader of the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), he has stumped for the TSU's candidates and, at the same time, lashed out against the KMT, for which he served as chairman for 12 years. Lee has therefore caused grave harm to the KMT, the pamphlet emphasized.
The KMT said, the way the party revoked Lee's membership was in accordance with the systems Lee established. He is not the first party leader to be fired. In 1995, the KMT revoked the membership of two vice chairmen, Lin Yang-kang (林洋港) and Hau Pei-tsun (郝柏村), for campaigning for New Party candidates.
Lee has repeatedly said that the KMT is an alien regime and that he had worked with "evil people" for the past decade. The pamphlet asks in reply: "Did Lee mean that all the members, who threw all-out support behind him to work hard together for the country and the party, have instantly deteriorated to become "bad sons?"
The pamphlet stresses that the KMT always upheld its line -- the principles Lee repeatedly mentioned in his capacity as president and KMT chairman: opposing Taiwanese independence, priority to "Taiwan first," and opposing hasty reunification between the two sides across the Taiwan Strait.
The pamphlet said although it was inevitable that Lee left the KMT, the party still thanks him for his contribution to the party and the nation.
