Lien Chan urges public to volunteer, serve nation

CNA , TAIPEI

Lien Chan (連戰), chairman of the KMT, urged the public yesterday to put their love of Taiwan into action by doing volunteer work.

Lien made the remarks during a video shoot for an ad announcing a program to publicize the awareness of volunteer service called, "volunteer a day for society." Lien and a score of KMT volunteers, armed with brooms, swept an area of Hsimenting in downtown Taipei yesterday. Lien said that individuals should be lifelong volunteers in the service of society.

Saying that the original script for the TV ad was somewhat stilted, Lien improvised some of the lines to make the commercial sound more natural.

Lien said that keeping in step with global efforts in volunteerism this year, the KMT will set up volunteer teams around Taiwan, setting disaster relief as their number one goal, with environmental protection as a priority. The groups will also work to improve society and the environment in general.

Lien and Hsieh Chi-ta (謝啟大), convener of the New Party, completed filming the ad yesterday. It will also feature DPP Chairman Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), and PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜).
