Dharma master cleanses World Trade Center site

MERCIFUL WAR: Saying the present war in Afghanistan is 'not a war of hatred,' the leader of the Fokuangshan monastery visited the site of the horrific terrorist attack

Taiwan's visiting Dharma Master Hsing Yun (¬P¶³ªk®v) claimed Friday that the US is waging a "merciful war" targeting terrorists, not Muslims, because the war is being carried out even as relief supplies are being airdropped over Afghanistan.

Hsing Yun, who heads the Fokuangshan monastery, made the remarks at a news conference before leading 30 of his followers in a blessing and cleansing ritual at the site of the World Trade Center.

At the conference, he expressed his opinion that the US-led war is "not a war of hatred." The US, he said, is using "mercy" and "wisdom" to subjugate the enemy. He also said that while he does not agree with war, the current conflict is a "necessary" conflict "for peace."

Hsing Yun also urged the US public not to panic in the face of reported cases of anthrax attacks, adding that he is confident in the survival of mankind.

On another occasion in midtown Manhattan later in the evening, Hsing Yun urged the various religions, economies and nations of the world to respect and accept each other and to seek out other ways of resolving differences other than through war.

He said that wealth cannot be measured merely in material or monetary terms. Security, health and wisdom are other kinds of wealth, he said.

During his visit, Hsing Yun donated US$200,000 to the American Red Cross on behalf of Fokuangshan for distribution to the families of the victims in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the US.
