Taichung council vice speaker freed after kidnapping

CNA , TAICHUNG

Taichung police say that Chang Hung-nien (張宏年), Taichung City Council vice speaker, who was abducted for ransom Oct. 1, was freed yesterday.

Chang returned home by taxi in the early evening and later gave a press conference at the request of the media, during which he said that the abduction was a "misunderstanding."

He claimed that he was not the target of the abductors and added that "they treated me well." But when asked whether a ransom was paid for his release, Chang became evasive.

According to Taichung City Police Bureau Director Chang Ching-yu (張慶裕), the abduction was the work of Hsueh Chiu (薛球) and Chen Yi-hua (陳益華), who are wanted for their involvement in a shooting incident in Miaoli County and several robberies.

The police officer said that although the abductors demanded a ransom of NT$300 million for Chang's release, his family had not paid the ransom.

Learning of Chang's safe release, many local political leaders rushed to his home to show their concern.

Police said their investigation was continuing.
