Though flooding, falling rocks, landslides and power outages were reported around Taiwan yesterday, no deaths and few injuries had been reported outside northern Taiwan as of press time last night.
In Changhua City in central Taiwan three minor injuries were reported among workers trying to pump water from a flooded underpass.
In the Hsinchu area, Chung-cheng Bridge between Chunglin township and Chutung township cracked and was closed immediately. Motorists were advised to use the New Chungcheng Bridge as a detour.
Hsinfeng township was severely flooded. Three people were rescued from their homes in Puho village and another six in Hohu village.
The Yunlin County Government warned residents at 4pm yesterday to prepare for a possible evacuation due to the swelling of a waterway at its confluence with the sea.
At press time, although it was continuing to rain heavily, an order to evacuate had not been issued.
"We will evacuate our residents who are living by the waterway and the sea if the rain keeps falling as the typhoon sweeps through," said Chang Jung-wei (
Also in Yunlin, there were landslides on the Tsaoling Highway and the Shihpi Highway in Kukeng township. Resulting obstructions are being removed from the roads.
There were no reports of injury or damage in Taitung County.
