Five KMT vice chairman and a number of other senior members close to Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) will visit the estranged former president soon to find out where his loyalties lie, the party said yesterday.
Chen Kang-chin (陳庚金), director-general of the KMT's Evaluation and Discipline Committee, said yesterday that Lee has violated party rules by campaigning for the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU).
If Lee continues to support the TSU and refuses to leave the KMT voluntarily, the committee will have to take action, Chen said.
The action against Lee, if any, will take place before the legislative elections set for Dec. 1, Chen said.
Justin Chou (周守訓), a spokesman for the KMT's Culture and Communications Affairs Committee, said the party would deal with Lee's violation of party rules cautiously out of respect for the former party chairman and head of state.
Chou said the party has notified Lee's office of its intention to visit him on Saturday and is waiting for Lee's response.
The five KMT vice chairmen are Vincent Siew (
But the five had not been officially notified as of yesterday.
Siew and Chiang yesterday said they would accept the assignment if the party wants them to visit Lee.
Some KMT officials, however, think that instead of sending people to visit Lee, it would be better to issue him a public letter.
Liu Chao-shiuan (
The KMT should specify in the letter the contribution Lee has made to the party in the past, identify what harm he is currently causing the party and how best to deal with the matter, Liu said.
