Taipei's Bureau of Environmental Protection issued a stern warning yesterday to residents who use counterfeit garbage bags.
According to the bureau, nearly 700 residents have been caught using counterfeit bags over the past year and have been fined NT$4,500. Another 33 have been caught counterfeiting or selling fake garbage bags. Many of the suspects were later found guilty and fined between NT$30,000 and NT$100,000.
The bureau yesterday said the city plans to stiffen penalties for those caught using counterfeit bags. The proposed regulations -- currently being reviewed by the Taipei City Council -- would impose fines of between NT$30,000 and NT$100,000 for residents caught using bogus bags.
Environmental officials also reminded the public yesterday that anyone who informs on a neighbor would receive 20 percent of any collected fine.
To report any illegal behavior, residents may contact the bureau at 02-27206301 or the Taipei Municipal Police Headquarters at 02-23113268.
