Police await DNA test results from Changhua deaths

STAFF WRITER

Police yesterday confirmed that they had completed DNA tests to determine if samples collected from entrepreneur Hung Jo-tan's (洪若潭) backyard belonged to his three missing children.

According to police, a picture of Hung's three children -- his oldest son Hung Chung-fu (洪祟釜), 24, second son Hung Chung-jen (洪崇荏), 23, and daughter Hung Meng-yu (洪孟瑜), 19 -- was found on Saturday afternoon when police were digging up a charred lawn in the backyard of Hung's luxurious home.

Police suspect that Hung's three children were cremated and their ashes buried there.

After forensics collected samples from the three children's toothbrushes, they successfully extracted their DNA information yesterday.

Police earlier confirmed that the charred remains of two bodies found inside a newly installed furnace in the backyard of the entrepreneur's home have been identified as Hung, 50, and his wife Yao Pao-yueh (姚寶月), 47.

Police yesterday also found a notebook that belongs to Hung's second son. According to the notebook, Hung asked his second son whether he was willing to kill himself with his parents. Police refused to elaborate.

Meanwhile, rumor has it that one of Hung's friends saw a handgun with a silencer at Hung's home. Police, however, said yesterday that no firearms have been found on the property.
