After three weeks of indecision, former DPP Cabinet official You Ying-lung (´å¬Õ¶©) has decided to accept his party's nomination for Hualien County Commissioner.
You, former campaign manager for President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) and one-time chairman of the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, has left his professorship at Soochow University to run for the job.
Yesterday You said it was the support of the central government for his bid that led him to accept the DPP's nomination.
"If I am elected, the central government has promised to
implement construction projects in the east -- including a nonstop rail connection between Taipei and Hualien, which will take less than 90 minutes -- and an eastern science park," You said.
In addition, You said that he recently had meetings with the president, the premier and several party officials to seek support for his candidacy.
Earlier this month, You said his campaign goal was "the east first" and urged the government to take concrete measures to promote Hualien's development.
Yesterday he said that the decision to run was a tough one, as he still has many goals left to achieve in academia.
Still, You said, he wants to devote himself to helping solve Taiwan's political chaos.
University colleagues and students, as well as You's wife, attended the press conference to show their support.
After You's announcement, the DPP confirmed You's nomination at its Central Standing Committee meeting in the afternoon.
You lost his bid in the DPP's April primaries to represent the party in the year-end legislative elections. His nomination for Hualien County commissioner has drawn fire from critics who say You is the candidate of high-ranking party officials who lack grassroots support.
