The Ministry of the Interior yesterday released modified regulations concerning mainland professionals' activities in Taiwan.
The modifications will take effect tomorrow and benefit scientists in particular.
To attract more mainland scientists to Taiwan to undertake research, the Interior Ministry has been working on extending the length of time that mainland professionals may stay in Taiwan and shortening their visa application process.
According to the new regulations, mainland scientists will be allowed to stay in Taiwan to undertake research for three years instead of the current two. The application process has also been shortened from three months to two months before the start of the research program.
Also, Taiwanese invite are allowed to sponsor up to 20 mainland researchers instead of the current five.
As well as relaxing certain regulations regarding mainland scientists, authorities also made some individual regulations stricter. To prevent Taiwanese organizations brokering visits by PRC nationals to Taiwan for non-professional purposes, the organizations in Taiwan that invite mainland scientists will be vetted. In the past, the Interior Ministry only vetted the mainland applicant.
