KMT Chairman Lien Chan (
Lien made the comment while addressing a seminar with grassroots KMT members.
During Taiwan's electoral history, Lien said, there have always been people who have taken advantage of ethnic issues to divide what is essentially a peaceful society to obtain political interest
As some of these people have in the past succeeded to come to power in this way, more are following suit, Lien said.
The TSU, set to be established tomorrow, is led by former minister of the interior Huang Chu-wen (黃主文). With the goal of joining with the DPP after the year-end legislative elections, the party's birth was reportedly endorsed by former president and KMT chairman Lee Teng-hui (李登輝).
Some of the TSU's founding members are those who failed to obtain KMT nominations for the upcoming elections.
Huang recently said that the KMT would have trouble becoming a truly localized political party unless it removed the word "China" from its party name. Strictly translated, the party's official name is the "Chinese Nationalist Party."
Lien responded by saying that the KMT has long ago proven its love for the nation by protecting Taiwan in every past conflict across the Taiwan Strait, and said it was "preposterous" to say that it was a non-localized party just because its name contained the word "China."
Lien said the KMT had now drawn a clear line with "black-gold" politics by refusing to nominate politicians on trial for criminal offenses, but that it was regrettable that some parties are recruiting those rejected by the KMT.
