Police break up coin counterfeiting ring in Changhua

After finding counterfeit NT$50 coins circulating in central Taiwan recently, the police raided a coin factory in a rural township in Changhua (彰化) County Saturday night, discovering fake coins whose face-value was almost NT$2 million and arresting seven suspects.

The fake coins found in the raid in Homei (和美) township weighed 71kg and were all imitations of the NT$50 piece, Changhua Police said yesterday.

The police did not give an estimate of how many fake coins were already in circulation.

The counterfeit coins have a wider seam between the yellow and white circles compared to real NT$50 coins, police said.
