The Taiwan High Court has awarded NT$10 million to a girl who was raped because a classmate was jealous of her good looks and outstanding grades.
The court took into account the tremendous suffering endured by the girl.
Four years ago, shocking atrocities were committed by four adol-escents against the girl, who was in junior high school at the time.
A model student and good-looking, the girl was liked by her classmates, except one who was jealous of her popularity.
One night in February 1997, the female classmate, surnamed Hsu, asked the victim to go shopping with her -- but the invitation turned into a nightmare.
Before the date, the jealous girl called up her boyfriend and his three friends, telling them they would have a lot of "fun" that night. Suspecting nothing, the victim joined the group of friends.
They took her to a steel plant in Hsintien (新店), Taipei County, where the boys worked. The nightmare began when the boys started beating, raping and humiliating the girl.
After seven hours, the girl was rescued. Ever since the event, she has been haunted by the ordeal and her family filed a case requesting damages of NT$10 million.
