Celebrity wins suit against adulterer

By Irene Lin  /  STAFF REPORTER

A former action-movie star was awarded NT$500,000 yesterday from a man who had an affair with his wife.

The Taipei District Court awarded the compensation to Wang Cheng-chun (王正權), known as Wang Wu (王羽), saying the extramarital affair caused psychological damage as well as harm to the retired movie star's reputation.

The affair was exposed last December when Wang led a group of reporters and police to the residence of defendant Chang Chao (張昭) and found Wang's wife with the man.

In a fury, Wang filed an adultery suit against his wife and Chang, then a high-ranking official with a KMT-owned business. The actor-turned-businessman subsequently dropped the suit against his wife but insisted on pursuing legal action against Chang.

Chang was convicted of adultery and sentenced to three months in prison. In the civil suit, Wang requested NT$20 million in compensation but was awarded NT$500,000 in yesterday's ruling.

Wang's wife -- they are currently separated -- once claimed she asked for a divorce but Wang refused. Women's groups in Taiwan often use this example to advocate the need to overhaul the current divorce laws.

The Ministry of Justice has just completed draft amendments to the divorce law, making five years of separation legal grounds for divorce.
