To reverse the tide, some have pegged the year-end legislative elections as a struggle between mainlanders and Taiwanese, a pet banner of ethnicity-conscious politicians on the campaign trail.
"As in the past, the voters can expect more identity debates in the run-up to the elections," said Tsai. "But don't expect a conclusive answer, [something] that has so far eluded historians."
