Bad news for primary and junior high school students. For the 2001 academic year, there will be just four days off for spring break, the Ministry of Education said yesterday. Under current regulations, the seven-day long spring vacation usually includes April 4, which is Women and Children's Day; April 5 which is Tomb Sweeping Day; a two-day weekend and three additional days. Under the new plan the three extra days will be eliminated.
Ministry officials said the adjustment was necessary to adapt to the two-day weekend schedule that went into effect last January, resulting in the end of school attendance on Saturdays.
Because of the two-day weekend, students would have just 196 days of schooling for the year, four days short of the required 200.
