Wang's business career, meanwhile, was booming and culminated in the establishment of the Eastern Multimedia Group (東森媒體科技集團) under his leadership.
Having since become a subsidiary of the Rebar Group, Eastern Multimedia has transformed its parent company -- a conglomerate born of the manufacturing industry -- to become one with significant stakes in the high-tech sector.
Eastern Multimedia now controls around one-third of the cable TV market share, provides broadband Internet networking services and runs one of the four fixed-line telecommunication companies licensed by the government.
For all his successes, Wang's dual roles as entrepreneur and politician have drawn criticism for being a conflict of interests.
Apart from his indictment for fraud, there have been reports suggesting Wang influenced the government's cable TV policy in order to facilitate a market monopoly for Eastern Multimedia. He has also reportedly tried to influence the licensing process for Taiwan's fixed-line network services.
