The punishment for driving while drunk and for recklessly speeding will become heavier as new measures of the Road Traffic Penalty Act take effect June 1.
According to the new measures, anyone who is caught driving while under the influence of alcohol will be fined between NT$15,000 and NT$60,000 and will have their driver's license revoked on the spot for one year.
Drunk drivers found guilty of seriously wounding someone with their cars will have their driver's license revoked for a two-year period while those who kill someone while driving drunk will have it revoked for life.
Those who are caught recklessly speeding will be fined between NT$30,000 and NT$90,000 and have their licenses revoked and license plates confiscated by police.
If those caught recklessly speeding are under age, they and their legal guardians will have to attend courses on traffic safety. The names of the guardians of the under-age offenders will be made public by police authorities.
Parents with small children must also pay heed to the new measures, which prohibit them from leaving children under six years of age or those who need special care unattended in their cars.
Violators will be fined NT$1,000 and obliged to take a four-hour course on traffic regulations.
