    Chen's coverage `low key'

    DPA, NEW YORK
    Thursday, May 24, 2001, Page 3

New York City welcomed him, but the private visit of Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) generated little coverage in the English media on Tuesday as he continued meeting with politicians and received a first-hand look at two of the city's most well known institutions.

Only The New York Times carried a half-page of coverage on Chen's visit in its Metro Section, with the headline, "Taiwan leader greeted in US with protests and warmth."

Neither the New York Daily News nor the New York Post wrote anything about Chen on Tuesday. Newsday, a suburban tabloid, did a short piece due to the Asian community in the New York region. The city's largest circulation Chinese newspaper, the World Journal, gave bipartisan coverage, allowing both Taiwanese residents to advertise in support of Chen and pro-Beijing Chinese to criticize his leadership as contrary to the one-China policy of the Chinese communist party. The Times said Chen arrived in the rain-soaked city "to fanfare and some protests last night, welcomed by politicians and by the Chinese community."
