Yam says Yahoo Taiwan plagiarized Web articles

STAFF WRITER

Internet portal site Yam (番薯藤) has accused Yahoo Taiwan (雅虎奇摩) of plagiarizing articles from its Web site and is considering taking legal action.

Yam officials, surrounded by a team of legal consultants, made the accusation at a press conference yesterday against Yahoo Taiwan, which recently merged with a local portal, Kimo.

Yam said Yahoo Taiwan, without authorization, had posted on its Web site more than 50 percent of articles that were originally composed for Yam between March 29 and April 17.

Yam said that under the "What's New Today" section on Yahoo Taiwan, one can find many articles plagiarized from Yam's Web site. Yam claimed the articles on its own Web site and Yahoo's were almost identical in content, wording and phrasing.

The company said it has asked its lawyers to notify Yahoo Taiwan of the alleged violations, and that it will wait for a response before deciding whether to file suit.

Yahoo Taiwan said yesterday it was sorry Yam made the accusations to the media without contacting the company first. Yahoo Taiwan also alleged Yam was trying to damage its reputation by airing the accusations to the media.

The company said it would investigate the alleged copyright violations immediately and would provide an explanation soon.
