Nantou County official arrested for attack on statue of Chiang Kai-shek

Stella Chen (陳婉真), director of Nantou County's Social Affairs Bureau, was arrested yesterday morning for damaging a statue of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) in 1995, the local media reported.

Chen was arrested when taking a walk in a park in Tienchung (田中) Township, Changhua County yesterday morning.

She was later transferred to Nantou County District Prosecutors Office.

According to police, Chen publicly damaged Chiang's statue in Taipei County when running for the National Assembly Representative seat five years ago and was later sentenced to 50 days in jail for the offense of damaging public property.

Although Chen's jail time was commuted to fines, she insisted that she was not guilty and refused to pay the fine.

In response to the arrest, Nantou County Commissioner Peng Pai-hsien (彭百顯) yesterday criticized the police's action, saying that they should not have arrested the director of his bureau.

On Jan. 12, Peng himself was also indicted by the Nantou District Prosecutors Office on charges of corruption. Prosecutors are asking for a hefty 20-year sentence as punishment for his alleged crimes.

During Peng's recent two-month detention on corruption charges, Chen started a hunger strike in order to demand the immediate release of the commissioner.
