A Taiwanese man released on Thursday after being detained by California police for allegedly kidnapping his two young sons was detained again almost immediately after his release because of passport and visa-related violations.
Wu Chien-feng (吳建豐) was arrested by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service on Thursday on charges of possessing two separate Republic of China passports, which he used to apply for two separate entrance visas to the US.
He had been released earlier in the day after prosecutors recommended to a San Francisco court a more lenient punishment for Wu after he had safely returned his two children to the US.
San Francisco police authorities arrested Wu on March 1 after he stepped off a plane coming from Taiwan. He had held the children since Jan. 9 without obtaining consent from the boys' mother, Hsiang Ya-ping, who has temporary custody rights over the children pending the couple's ongoing divorce proceedings.
After Wu took the couple's sons back to Taiwan on Jan. 8, Hsiang informed the US police, who issued a warrant for Wu's arrest on charges of kidnapping the children, who are US citizens.
Wu returned to the US without his sons on March 1 and was arrested upon arrival.
