US defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin said yesterday it will open a new company in Taiwan next week to offer support for the island's air force.
The new company, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Service Taiwan (LMAST), will open on Thursday to provide logistics and technical support for the aircraft and helicopters operated by Taiwan's air force, it said in a statement.
LMAST will also help Taiwan's defense ministry convert the air force's aircraft maintenance depots into government-owned company-operated facilities, it said.
Taiwan ordered 150 F-16 fighter jets manufactured by Lockheed Martin in 1992 for US$5.8 billion to upgrade its defense capability. The last batch of the fighters were delivered to Taiwan at the end of 1999.
