Government levies fines on vendors of dog meat

The Council of Agriculture plans to convene a meeting of its animal protection committee to discuss implementation of the newly passed amendments to the Animal Protection Law (動物保護法), which for the first time provides protection for stray pets and birds.

Under the new amendments, dog meat vendors and anyone who tortures dogs, cats or birds will face fines ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$50,000.

Cheng Chung-chiang (程中江), director of the agriculture ministry's animal industry department, said it would track down all sources of dog meat and stop the trade.
