The schedule for Taiwan's WTO entry might be changed again and postponed to the end of this year, a Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture (COA) official said yesterday.
The official said that the Beijing delegation ended its 15th round of negotiations with the WTO working group yesterday without reaching any concrete resolution on a dispute over agricultural subsidies and the establishment of quarantine units.
The official said that because China's entry procedures have always been delayed, Taiwan's entry will also be postponed.
Beijing's chief representative for trade talks, Long Yongtu, said recently that Beijing will make no more concessions on agricultural talks and will insist on demanding agricultural subsidies that are quite different to those of the US and Australia, which left the talks in stalemate.
Unless one party makes concessions, the issue is unlikely to be resolved in the foreseeable future, the official said, adding that if Beijing is unable to enter the WTO in June as scheduled, the US Congress should vote again on China's permanent normal trade relations status.
