Taiwan to join in Asian census of threatened birds

CNA , TAIPEI

Taiwan bird watchers will be mobilized to join in a census of black-faced spoonbills to be conducted simultaneously across East Asia today, the Wild Bird Federation of Taiwan has announced.

Federation officials said that black-faced spoonbills will be counted in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea today and tomorrow.

As Taiwan is a major wintertime habitat of the rare birds, with more than half of the world's spoonbills migrating here every year, the nation will play a major role in the count, the officials said.

Since bird watchers in Asia launched the bird census six years ago, the population of black-faced spoonbills in the region has climbed from just 459 in 1995 to 772 last year, they said.
