Lee told the Taipei Times that activists should accept the passage of the EIA, as it povides sufficient safeguards to ensure the protection of the environment.
"Of course we take the residents of the 23 villages near the lagoon seriously. We won't let the lagoon be destroyed because of the project," Lee said.
EPA officials, however, admitted that local political struggles had deeply affected the EIA evaluation of the project.
