1960s movie star Bardot elated over new dog meat law

Brigitte Bardot, chairwoman of the International Pets Protection Foundation (IPPF) sent a letter to Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) on Friday to praise recent legislation to ban the preparation and sale of dog meat.

The 1960s movie star said in the letter that the Legislative Yuan's passage of the law at the beginning of a new century was a good omen.

She said that five years ago, former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) had pledged to her that the Taiwan government would adopt humanitarian measures for treating stray dogs.

Bardot said she is glad to see the implementation of animal protection policies by the government and said it will encourage Asian nations with similar dog meat-eating customs to strengthen their animal protection laws.
