Mobile phones will soon get radiation warning labels

DPA , TAIPEI

Mobile phones sold in Taiwan will be required to carry health warnings from July, the Directorate General of Telecommunications (DGT) said yesterday.

The phones will be required to disclose the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which measures the amount of radio waves that are emitted from a handset.

"So far we don't know definitely if [the phones] are dangerous or not," said Hsu Hsi-lan, head of the DGT's Systems Technical Division.

Mobile phone companies will be given half a year to comply with the new regulations. Those companies that fail to follow the rules won't be allowed to sell on the market after July, Hsu said.
