A group of legislators from the KMT is scheduled to visit China between Jan. 4 and Jan. 11 to exchange views with Chinese leaders on the issue of "three direct links" across the Taiwan Strait.
The group will be comprised of some 40 KMT lawmakers and specialists from several of the party's think-tanks, including Kao Kung-lian (
The KMT legislators and specialists, at the invitation of China's intermediary body with Taiwan, the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), are expected to visit Beijing first to meet Chinese leaders on matters pertaining to direct trade, mail, and shipping links between Taiwan and mainland China, better known as the "three links" initiative, according to Ho.
The group members are also expected to meet with officials from China's ministries of transportation, foreign trade, postal affairs and civil aviation, for talks on technical issues related to the "three links."
Following their Beijing visit, the KMT legislators and specialists will visit China's leading port cities of Shanghai, Tianjin, Qingdao, and Fuzhou on fact-finding tours, Ho said.
According to Ho, KMT Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) said he fully supports the forthcoming visit to China by KMT lawmakers and experts, noting that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should resume negotiations as early as possible.
He added that as the major opposition party, the KMT should do what it can in this respect as the ruling DPP has been unable to.
