Women polled about health

DPA , TAIPEI

Losing weight is the most important health topic for young women in Taipei, followed by cosmetics and health food products, a survey published yesterday revealed.

Over half, or 55.7 percent, of all women in the age group 16 to 18 years old are most interested in how to shed a few kilos and improve their figure.

As well, some 82 percent actually think they need to lose weight, according to the survey conducted by the Taipei Union Hospital for Women and Children and the Taipei Medical University.

"It's not that they are actually fat," said Thunder Lei (雷宗憲), who is vice superintendent at the hospital.

"But many come under the influence of the media and advertisements, which constantly promote certain beauty standards," Lei added

Of those women who believe they need to lose weight, 28.4 per cent are on a self-imposed diet, while 8.5 percent take slimming products.

The study also showed that 47.2 percent of women aged 16 to 18 are most dissatisfied with their legs, followed by breasts at 19 percent, and the face at 15.5 percent.

Close to 16 percent of the women said they would consider cosmetic surgery if they had the money.
