44-hour workweek to face final test

LABOR ISSUES The president has offered an unspecified compromise to opposition legislators if they throw support behind the Cabinet's workweek plan

The labor groups are demanding that the government implement the 84-hours-per-fortnight measure as originally scheduled and have exerted intense pressure on lawmakers to stick to the legislature's June 16 decision.

Labor groups yesterday again sent representatives to the legislature to monitor the actions of the legislators.

"We will continue to fight for it until the measure is put into force on Jan. 1 as scheduled," said Lin Huei-kwung (林惠官), president of the Chinese Federation of Labor (中華民國全國總工會).
