DPP lawmakers recall murder of female activist

STAFF WRITER

Yesterday was the fourth anniversary of the rape and murder of the DPP Women's Affairs Department chief Peng Wan-ru (彭婉如).

Several female DPP legislators, along with local women's rights activists, yesterday visited Minister of the Interior Chang Po-ya (張博雅), asking her to continue promoting women's rights and safety in Taiwan.

The DPP's current Women's Affairs Department chief, Ho Pi-chen (何碧珍), yesterday pointed out that incidences of domestic violence against women in northern Taiwan were actually on the decreae.

The problem, however, still remains in the southern part of Taiwan.

The female DPP legislators yesterday also suggested that the government spend more money to promote women's rights and to ensure the safety of every woman in Taiwan.

Wang Chin-wang (王進旺), director-general of the National Police Administration, said yesterday that police need more training on how to handle cases of domestic violence.
