Taxi fees in Taiwan's major cities are scheduled to go up today. According to Taipei's Bureau of Transportation, the flag-fall rate will be raised from NT$50 to NT$70.
Taipei officials said yesterday that if a driver is using a new meter or has recalibrated an old one, the passenger will be charged the price shown on the meter.
If the driver is still using an old meter that has not been recalibrated, the passenger will be charged according to a price chart, provided to the drivers by the bureau.
Officials also said that the flag-fall rate might be as much as NT$80 if the taxi is coming from Taoyuan or other neighboring cities or counties, and that passengers will be charged according to that particular city's or county's taxi fee system.
In Kaohsiung, the Bureau of Reconstruction yesterday said that taxi rates will also be raised starting today.
The NT$70 flag-fall remains the same while the NT$5 fee for every 300m travelled will be changed to NT$5 for 250m.
According to the director of the bureau, Lee Wen-liang (§õ¤å¨}), the taxi rates in Kaohsiung are to rise by 7 percent.
"It's lower than the 12.5 percent in Taipei," Lee said.
