Man confesses to accidentally killing his girlfriend

By Jou Ying-cheng  /  STAFF REPORTER

A man who allegedly shot his girlfriend was arrested and said he killed her by accident when he was playing with a homemade handgun, police said yesterday.

"I'll shoot you," is what Wang Wen-sheng (王文聖), 21, told police he said to his new girlfriend Huang Yi-chen (黃怡甄), after pointing the barrel of his gun at the girl's head.

Police said Wang told them he had been joking, but the gun went off accidentally.

Wang said the accident took place last Sunday night when he, Huang and a friend named Yu were drinking together at Yu's home in Yingke (鶯歌) township, Taipei County.

Becoming tipsy, Wang took out his handgun to show off. Huang asked for a closer look at the gun, the deadly joke was then made, followed by the shooting, according to Wang's confession, cited by the police.

Huang died instantly, Wang told police.

Terrified and not knowing what to do, he and Yu transported the body to an area near the border of Taipei and Taoyuan Counties to dump the body in undergrowth.

Worried, however, the body would be discovered, two days later Wang moved the body to an off-road waste dump in Taishan (泰山) township. The body was found covered by canvas last Friday at noon.

Detectives found no identification documents on the victim except for a lighter with a photo sticker in her pocket.

By releasing the photo to the media, the 18-year-old victim's family soon came forward to identify Huang, officials at the Taipei County Police bureau's Hsinchuang (新莊) subdivision said.

Police then checked out Huang's social contacts and found Wang, who was said to be the person Huang had been with before she disappeared.

Detectives arrested Huang on Saturday evening and after questioning he confessed, the police said.

Yu was also arrested later.

As of press time the handgun had not been recovered. Police gave no other details of further evidence, but said they would be investigating Wang's account of the incident.
