Fateful SIA flight claims one more victim, toll now 83


A Singaporean passenger on board the ill-fated Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ006 died Friday in a Taipei hospital, raising the death toll to 83, SIA said Friday in a statement.

The Los Angeles-bound Boeing 747-400 with 179 people aboard attempted to take off from a runway closed for repairs in Taipei last month and crashed after slamming into heavy construction machinery.

The three pilots of the flight are still in Taipei to assist with the crash probe, and have beeen forbidden from leaving the country.

Singaporean Minister for Communications and Information Technology Yeo Cheow Tong (姚照東) had said the Taiwan-led investigation could take one year to complete.

The crash was the first in the carrier's 28-year history.
