An alliance of anti-nuclear groups held a press conference yesterday to announce plans for a major joint protest march in Taipei on Nov. 12.
Over 100 protest groups are expected to gather from all regions of Taiwan, drawing with them between 150,000 and 200,000 supporters. Their itinerary is also scheduled so that the protesters will rendezvous and join forces with the "autumn struggle (秋鬥)" worker's protest march, which is scheduled for the same day.
Representatives of anti-nuclear groups explained that each person participating in the march will carry a sunflower, symbolizing a smiling face as well as solar energy. The protesters plan to use "the warmest possible tone" to express "their most firm resolution," making known their deep desire for a nuclear-free homeland to all political parties.
In line with maintaining "the warmest possible tone," the front ranks of marchers will primarily be composed of supporters of environmental organizations opposed to nuclear power. Bringing up the rear will be political organizations opposed to a recall of the president.
The itinerary of the protest begins next Sunday afternoon at 2pm departing from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
