High-ranking opposition leaders agreed yesterday that the heads of the three main opposition parties should meet next Saturday to discuss how to unite to better supervise the government, saying the goal of their alliance to recall President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) has not changed.

The president, while inspecting areas affected by Typhoon Xangsane yesterday, stressed that the government should be paying attention to reconstruction and relief efforts, saying that maintaining "stability" should be the most important thing for politicians.

KMT Secretary-General Lin Feng-cheng (林豐正) said after a closed-door meeting with People First Party Secretary-General Chun Jung-chi (鍾榮吉) and the New Party's Secretary-General Lee Pin-nan (李炳南) that the three parties would coordinate with each other to become the major power in the Legislative Yuan.

"We will positively lead the direction of legislation and even the government's policy," Lin said.

They also condemned Chen's administration for "refusing to criticize itself," saying the president still did not know how to respect public opinion.

"Therefore, our mission to recall the president will continue," Lin said.

Meanwhile, Chen vowed to help victims of the typhoon recover as soon as possible.

"All problems involving electricity and water supplies should be solved by next Monday," he told government officials.

The president said he was concerned about the widespread disruption to electricity and water supplies in Hsichih

He ordered that more effort be made to help restore them so that students in the city could return to school by next Monday at the very latest.
