"Taiwan is especially well positioned to become a leading center of the next energy system," said WWI president, Christopher Flavin, adding that now was a good timing for Taiwan to development renewable energy technology.

Flavin said in September when he visited Taiwan that the 1979 Three Mile Island accident in the US prompted renewable energy research in the 1980s and that the 1986 Chernobyl accident was the impetus for renewable energy research in Europe.

"This cancellation is a step toward a sane and sustainable energy policy," said John Knox, executive director of the Earth Island Institute.

"We are heartened by this very courageous and responsible step that recognizes that the long-term costs of nuclear power far outweigh the apparent short-term benefits, once all the factors of immediate radioactive danger and long-term radioactive guardianship -- over tens of thousands of future years -- are considered," Knox said.
