The family of former Kaohsiung City councilor Lin Ti-chuan (林滴娟) yesterday announced their decision to renounce a request for 452,000 renminbi (about US$56,000) in civil compensation for Lin's murder in China in 1998.
Lin's father, Lin Ping-hui (
Chang said renouncing the compensation was a decision made to save the murderers' families from becoming homeless, because the sanction will be executed through compulsory seizure of the murderers' property.
Lin, a DPP member, was kidnapped and killed on July 29, 1998, during a trip to China's Liaoning Province. She was traveling with her boyfriend, who was doing business in China.
Four kidnappers were arrested shortly after the murder, but the mastermind remains at large.
The trial in China concluded recently, with one receiving a death sentence and others lengthy prison terms. The court also ruled that the four should pay Lin's family a total of 452,000 renminbi in civil compensation.
The DPP yesterday also issued a statement urging China to establish the rule of law to protect the safety and interests of Taiwanese traveling in China.
