The so-called "Taiwan experience" (台灣經驗) offers lessons for other developing countries, former President Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) said in a speech given yesterday at the Forum 2000 Conference (兩千年論壇), held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The topic for yesterday's session was "the role of education and science in globalization."

According to Lee, Taiwan's successful industrial and high-tech development today is actually based on its outstanding agricultural development in the early years.

"We would love to assist other developing countries to adopt the successful Taiwan experience," Lee said.

He also said that it is not easy to successfully transfer the experience and techniques of development from advanced countries to countries that are in the early stages of economic growth because the situations in each country might not be the same.

Lee attended the entire session yesterday, talking actively with other international leaders during the breaks.

Lee also said that education is also key during the process of development and should be encouraged and never be ignored.

Taiwan's representative in Prague, Roy Wu (烏元彥), held a dinner party to welcome Lee and his wife yesterday evening.

Lee had been invited to attend the forum by the Czech President Vaclav Havel.

"I am glad to meet this old friend [Havel], though we had not met each other face to face before," Lee said.

Lee also said that it is always interesting to hear so many different opinions from other world leaders.

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel peace laureate, along with a number of other guest speakers, are scheduled to give a speech at the conference tomorrow.
