Activists offer alternatives to nuclear power

"Taipower's argument that nuclear energy is economic is questionable, because it considers the cost of fuel feedstock only," said Wang To-Far (王塗發), an economist from National Taipei University.

Wang added that the cost of a nuclear power plant -- in this case, US$5.6 billion -- might not be an accurate estimate if managing nuclear waste and dealing with unseen effects on the environment and human health are taken into account.
