Soong ballots found in school trash can

STAFF WRITER

A total of one hundred election ballots which had been marked as votes for independent presidential candidate James Soong were found in a junior high school in Tainan county.

Officials from Tainan City's Election Committee held a press conference yesterday to admit mistakes had been made in the process of discarding the ballots, but said the mistake would not change the result of the total votes Soong received.

The ballots were found discarded in Mingte junior high school, a polling station in Tainan City.

At the press conference, officials from the commission said the votes in Soong's favor had actually been counted, but had been left behind accidentally.

The officials admitted they had made a mistake in the process of handling the ballots, but insisted that the total number of votes for Soong were accurate and would remain.

They added they would present a detailed report about their investigation into the incident, and that they would punish the personnel involved for their negligence.

Fang Chin-hai (方金海), the vice manager of Soong's campaign headquarters in Tainan city, demanded an explanation for the incident and said a complaint would be filed.
