State TV stations want the KMT to back off

STAFF WRITER

Four days after the KMT's fall from power, journalists from Taiwan's three KMT-controlled TV stations came out strongly against political interference in their news coverage.

Wang Chih-ying (王智應), deputy news section chief of Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV, 台視), released an open letter signed by several dozen colleagues, demanding an end to "invisible hands" (黑手) manipulating their news coverage.

Wang said he decided to speak out after he saw his reporters beaten by demonstrators in front of KMT headquarters recently.

"How can a TV station vie for viewership when its reporters have lost their dignity, when they are already abandoned by viewers?" Wang said.

Tang Chien-ming (湯健明), news section chief of China Television Company (CTV, 中視), said the company's management would respect the opinions of the journalists and would not question or punish them for expressing their views.

Meanwhile, Li Tai-lin (李泰臨), news section chief at China Television System (CTS, 華視), admitted that his section had received "pleas" from senior figures "not to juggle with the bosses' heads." The company would need fundamental restructuring to change the situation, Li said.
