Lien speaks to China through Hong Kong

STAFF WRITER

KMT presidential hopeful, Lien Chan(連戰) said yesterday "special state-to-state" relations can help normalize cross-strait ties and his call to "end hostility and sign a peace agreement" was more concrete than an "interim agreement" as proposed by his opponents.

"If I am elected president, I will represent the 22 million people of Taiwan and will pay a visit to China under the principle of reciprocity and mutual respect," Lien said in an interview.

The interview will be published today in the Hong Kong daily, Ming Bao(明報).

He then added that the "special state-to-state" model is a reiteration of fact from the historical, political and legal perspectives and was put forth to defend Taiwan's interests and dignity.

Lien said the statement would contribute to the normalization of cross-straight relations because it will lay a foundation for potential future political negotiations on an equal footing.

When asked for his comments on the "interim agreements" proposed by other presidential candidates, he said his call to end hostility between China and Taiwan was more constructive.

Peace between China and Taiwan is a win-win situation that is possible if Beijing puts aside its military threats against Taiwan, Lien said.
