Dozens of survivors of the Sept. 21 earthquake staged a demonstration in front of KMT presidential candidate Lien Chan's (連戰) Taipei campaign headquarters yesterday to protest against accusations that they had taken money from a presidential candidate in exchange for a protest against the government.
Wu Chung-li (吳中立), a spokesperson for Lien, told reporters on Tuesday that survivors from quake-stricken Tali City in Taichung County and Chungliao Township in Nantou County had taken bribes from a presidential candidate to launch a camp-out protest at Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in March as a way to cast an image of incompetence on the government and thus on Lien and his running mate Vincent Siew (蕭萬長).
During the demonstration yesterday, representatives from the 921 Earthquake Victims Alliance (九二一大地震受災聯盟) said the plan to protest against what they saw as government inefficiency had nothing to do with the presidential race or any candidate.
Their purpose was to remind the government to fulfill the promises it had made, the representatives said. The protesters said they had never received any money from a presidential candidate and asked Lien's camp to provide concrete proof of the charge.
