Shih also said that the decline in importance of the China factor is due to this election taking place in a political climate different from that in the last presidential election four years ago.
"At that time, when tension escalated between the two sides, it was natural for voters to be affected by the strained atmosphere. But with the climate currently less strained, voters [now] have more to think about than cross-strait issues," Shih said.
