New Chen Shui-bian book a bestseller

STAFF WRITER

DPP presidential candidate Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) celebrated successful sales of his latest book The Son of Taiwan yesterday, along with 16 publishers and a group of writers including Wu Tan-ju (吳淡如) and Hsiao-yei (小野). Chen's book has climbed to the top of the best-seller lists at all of Taiwan's major bookstores.

The book has already sold 200,000 copies, more than the Chinese version of President Lee's book, With the People Always in my Heart.

Chen has said he will donate the NT$7 million in royalties he will receive from the book sales to charities working for children's welfare.

He said he also plans to write another book recounting his life in the past two years, if he wins the election.

In The Son of Taiwan, Chen compares Taiwanese to water buffalo, a metaphor for both hard work and tragedy.

But he also encourages people in Taiwan to overcome frustration, and believes the spirit of Taiwan will shine through with confidence.

While other writers have lauded him as a quality author, Chen said the real success of his book is in the Taiwan spirit he promotes, which is identified with, and shared by, many of his readers.
